Berlin (d.de) – The Federal Government is prioritising international cooperation in order to implement the Agenda 2030 sustainability goals. “We can only achieve the 17 global goals for sustainable development if we strengthen international solidarity and multilateralism,” said Development Minister Svenja Schulze on the occasion of the Federal Government adopting the transformation report on “International Responsibility and Cooperation”. The report sets out how greater consideration can be given to the international dimension when implementing Germany’s sustainability strategy.
“We can only achieve the global sustainability goals with supportive societies,” Schulze said. “In our development policy we are fighting to break down inequalities between countries in the Global South and the Global North, between rich and poor, between the genders and between different groups of people.” Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke called Agenda 2030 a “milestone in multilateralism”. She added that we were now in the critical phase of the implementation. Germany, she said, was working on an international level to fight the climate crisis, species extinction and global pollution.
This year marks the half-way point of Agenda 2030 for global sustainability, which was adopted unanimously in 2015 by all 193 member states of the United Nations. The future summit in September 2024 is another key event for advancing implementation of the goals.
